As Sony’s benchmark sustainability partner, ISI Global is helping the brand make strides towards its ambitious “Road to Zero” goal of reducing its environmental footprint to zero by 2050.

By delivering sustainable retail solutions like the “Live Life Loud” display, we are proving that cutting-edge design and eco-conscious practices can go hand-in-hand, transforming both the in-store experience and Sony’s environmental impact.

The Background

ISI Global has enjoyed a long-standing partnership with Sony, and in 2022, we became their go-to partner for sustainability-focused retail solutions.

Working alongside Sony’s procurement team, we helped develop a comprehensive Sustainability Action Plan that aligns with Sony’s Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) commitments. This plan included detailed assessments of Sony’s retail footprint and the establishment of bi-annual carbon emissions reporting to support ongoing reductions.

Our approach to sustainable retail design, guided by our ISO14001 certification, puts People, Planet, and Profit at the heart of everything we do. Every display is thoughtfully designed for longevity, modularity, and responsible end-of-life solutions, with materials carefully selected to reduce environmental impact. From reducing CO2 footprints to embracing circular design principles like reusability and recyclability, projects like “Live Life Loud” demonstrate our commitment to creating eco-conscious solutions that deliver lasting impact.

Implementation

The “Live Life Loud” project became a turning point in our partnership with Sony, exemplifying sustainable retail design.

Our design team began by rethinking the traditional approach to display units, focusing on circularity to maximize flexibility and minimize material waste. The result was a modular countertop display made from 100% recycled steel, with elements designed to be reconfigured easily for future use.

Each component of the display was selected for its sustainability profile. For instance, the top panels and brand module base are crafted from recycled polymer sheets, while the illuminated back panel uses recycled fabric graphics sourced from plastic bottles. This sustainable approach extends to the product information, which is conveyed through green mag graphics and green vinyl—100% PVC-free, glue-free, and bubble-free—printed with water-based inks to ensure recyclability at end-of-life.

The digital interaction feature of the “Live Life Loud” display further exemplifies our modular approach: push buttons for sound experiences can be rearranged to suit new product ranges, making the unit adaptable to Sony’s evolving product line. This flexibility reduces the need for new materials and allows Sony to refresh the display.

Throughout production, we engaged our technical team to value engineer each design choice, ensuring minimal material use without compromising functionality. Using SolidWorks plugins and the SUSTAIN ® tool, we analysed the environmental impact at each stage, allowing us to adjust and improve sustainability metrics. The results for the “Live Life Loud” unit speak for themselves, with a Sustain Score of 17.73, embedded carbon of 107.98 kg per display, 89.62% recycled content, and 98.72% recyclability at disposal. This data-driven approach has become a cornerstone of our sustainability strategy, enabling us to track carbon emissions from production to display.

Conclusions

ISI Global’s partnership with Sony is setting a new standard for sustainable retail design.

Since the initial launch, the “Live Life Loud” display has been rolled out across Europe, adapting seamlessly to three new product introductions through its modular design. By prioritizing flexibility, recycled materials, and carbon tracking, we’re helping Sony achieve its sustainability milestones while delivering immersive, eco-conscious customer experiences. Together, we’re proving that captivating retail environments can align with ambitious environmental goals, redefining the possibilities of sustainable retail.
